VICE PRESIDENT RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT, AEROFARMS
April Agee Carroll, PhD is Vice President of Research and Development at AeroFarms®, a high-tech vertical farming company that produces high quality, delicious produce indoors in the heart of communities around the globe.
As a pioneer in the field of plant phenomics, which is the study of all observable characteristics of a plant, Dr. Carroll utilizes advanced imaging technologies, molecular techniques, and data science to model plant growth and development in context of environmental inputs. These models are then translated to actionable data to manage grower decisions in real-time. The goal is to improve yields, control plant qualities like texture and flavor, and enhance nutritional properties and other plant metabolites.
Prior to joining AeroFarms, Dr. Carroll served Purdue University as Director of Phenomics, where she coordinated diverse research efforts around the first field phenotyping facility in North America and a world class controlled environment research center. To apply big data sets toward actionable information, she led development of a data platform for plant science researchers called Smarter Ag®.
As Controlled Environments Research and Technology Development Lead for DuPont Pioneer, Dr. Carroll was the lead biologist on the facility design and scientific validation for two automated controlled environment plant production and characterization facilities, totaling more than $65M. She also led multi-disciplinary project tactical teams focused on pipeline development for rapid evaluation of diverse traits and crops.
Dr. Carroll holds a Ph.D. in Plant Science from the University of California, Riverside where she developed and applied high throughput automated imaging systems for plant genetics.
