Associate Professor, Department of Biological Sciences, National University of Singapore
Dr. Swarup is an Associate Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences NUS and Deputy Director of NUS Environmental Research Institute and Deputy Research Director at the Singapore Centre on Environmental Life Science Engineering. Prof. Swarup’s team studies the ecology of highly complex microbial communities in the environment and in agriculture from genes to ecosystems level scales. Their focus is to determine the mechanistic basis of ecosystem functioning for urban surface water systems and urban farming systems.
Prof Swarup’s team takes a multidisciplinary approach by incorporating hydrology, robotics and AI, metagenomics and transcriptomics, metabolomics, computational, and high-resolution imaging to study these interesting biological systems. Prof. Swarup has made significant contributions in the fields of metabolomics and integrative ‘omics, which he now combines using ecology-based concepts.
Their team has developed a research framework to integrate effects of environmental stressors with functional responses of urban freshwater and farming systems, which has led to science-based environmental and agricultural solutions for improving the management of these complex systems.
