“Facility design and infrastructure really set the foundation for food safety in CEA. If the facility itself isn’t designed to support sanitation and contamination control, it becomes much harder to manage those risks effectively long term,” says Caitlin Pickard, Account Executive at Ceres Certifications International (CCI).

Pickard speaks about operational challenges, the structural conditions that underpin them, and the regulatory changes operators should be preparing for. “Many of these challenges, like environmental monitoring and sanitation, often trace back to how the facility is designed and maintained,” she says.

HVAC and airflow patterns
HVAC systems present a separate concern. “When condensation forms, especially from HVAC systems above product zones, it creates a direct contamination risk, especially if it’s dripping onto exposed product or food contact surfaces. HVAC systems also impact airflow through the facility. So if they aren’t properly designed or maintained, they can contribute to both condensation and the movement of contamination through the space. Many environmental monitoring programs include swabbing under those condensation points, along with air sampling and routine checks of the filters, the ductwork, and those airflow patterns.”

Cornell Researchers Help North Country Growers Extend Growing Seasons

At Wild Work Farm in the North Country’s Keene Valley, the last frost can come as late as mid-June, and the first frost usually hits in September, said owner and operator Lissa Goldstein. Coping with that very short growing season is one of Goldstein’s primary challenges.

For decades, Cornell’s Willsboro Research Farm on the edge of Lake Champlain has been conducting research to help North Country growers like Goldstein make the most of short growing seasons. The U.S. Department of Agriculture maps regions based on temperatures to identify hardiness zones, which help growers know which crops and varieties they can plant – lower numbers are colder, and higher warmer. The Hudson Valley, Long Island and much of the Finger Lakes growing regions fall into hardiness zones 6-7. In the Adirondacks and northward, that hardiness falls to 4 or 5.

“Any research that’s specific to this region, to our growing season, is really helpful, because we’re very different from the rest of New York State,” Goldstein said. “The people that work at Willsboro, they are very intimately aware of what the growers in the area are doing and what we’re focused on. So they’re able to tailor the research so that it is relevant to us.”

WUR develops simulated greenhouse environment for faster robot development

How do you enable a robot to harvest tomatoes in an environment that is constantly changing? Wageningen University & Research (WUR) is exploring how simulation can accelerate and refine the development of harvesting robots for greenhouse horticulture. Researchers are building a simulated greenhouse environment in which robots and tomato plants interact realistically. 

Testing robots in greenhouse horticulture is complex in practice. Plants grow, conditions shift, and each harvest permanently alters the situation. As a result, tests are difficult to repeat under identical conditions. WUR is therefore developing a simulation environment that digitally replicates this dynamic setting, allowing robot design and control systems to be tested in a systematic and repeatable way.
“Robot simulation is quite common in controlled environments such as car factories, but in greenhouse horticulture this is genuinely new,” says Arjan Vroegop, researcher at WUR and project leader within the Vision+Roboticsteam. “Here, you are dealing with living plants and significant natural variation. That makes simulation much more complex.”

‘So many new local greenhouses that it’s hard to stand out’

Catching the eye of consumers scanning store shelves can be a challenge in the greenhouse-grown or controlled environment agriculture (CEA) leafy greens category. “There are so many new local greenhouse or vertical farm operations that are really designed specifically for lettuce production,” says Ian Adamson of Greenbelt Organic Greens, a certified organic controlled environment agriculture (CEA) grower in Ontario, Canada. “We are still the only organic local option available, but it’s hard to stand out in the sea of other local greens.”

To help enhance its differentiation on store shelves, the company is leaning into one of its strengths–namely its ability to grow a number of different ingredient items. With that in mind, this week it is launching two new SKUs: a Herb Medley which is a blend of lettuce mixed with aromatic herbs like dill, cilantro and parsley, giving the combination a unique Middle Eastern flavor; and Asian Mix which has Pac Choi, Japanese Spinach, Pea Shoots, Mizuma and it’s an item that can be eaten either fresh or stir fried. Both items are rolling out in a major Ontario retailer.

A Collaborative Path To Successful CEA Projects

From HortiDaily.com — As controlled environment agriculture projects continue to scale and diversify, developers are increasingly recognizing that successful greenhouse facilities are rarely the result of technology decisions made late in the process. Instead, the most resilient and productive operations are built through integrated planning, where specialists from multiple disciplines collaborate from the earliest design stages.

According to Joe Swartz, Senior Vice President at American Hydroponics (AmHydro), the industry is shifting away from a reactive, technology-first approach toward a more coordinated development strategy.

“The greenhouse structure, growing system, climate systems, automation, harvesting, packaging, cold storage, and distribution are not independent choices,” he says. “They’re one continuous flow.”

Moving beyond technology-first design

Over the past few years, the CEA sector has experienced both rapid expansion and significant project setbacks. In many cases, Joe says, difficulties emerged when projects prioritized specific technologies before fully defining the business model or operational requirements.
“The industry has gone through significant challenges over the past two years, and a lot of that was caused by unrealistic expectations and technologies that didn’t provide positive economics.”

He emphasizes that, despite its technological advancements, CEA remains fundamentally an agricultural enterprise.

“Farming is farming; whether it’s outdoors, in a greenhouse, or in an indoor facility,” he says. “The economic rules, the horticultural rules and the market rules all apply equally.”

For this reason, successful projects often begin by defining market demand, crop strategy, operational capacity and financial targets before finalizing technology selections.

Designing systems to work together

A key principle of integrated CEA development is synchronizing technologies across the entire production chain. Rather than selecting systems individually, project teams design the greenhouse structure, hydroponic system, automation, packaging, and logistics infrastructure as a single operational platform.

This collaborative approach was recently applied in the planning of a three-hectare leafy greens greenhouse in Newberry, Florida by Harvest Singularity.

Project CEO Charles Garza engaged multiple technology partners early in the design phase, including American Hydroponics for hydroponic systems and Dalsem Complete Greenhouse Projects for greenhouse design and construction. Additional partners such as JASA Packaging Solutions and TTA-ISO joined to address packaging, automation and post-harvest handling.

By involving these specialists from the outset, the facility’s crop production, harvesting, packaging and distribution processes could be designed simultaneously rather than retrofitted later.

From HortiDaily.com —  The opening keynote of Indoor Ag-Con 2026, titled “CEA Alliance Insights on the State of the Industry,” highlighted a sector transitioning from rapid expansion to a phase of rigorous operational discipline. Moderated by Tom Stenzel, executive director of the CEA Alliance, the session brought together Dane Almassy (Local Bounti), Aaron Fields (Campo Caribe), Jesper Hansen (YesHealth Group), and Josh McClung (Cox Farms). The panel indicated that for high-tech greenhouse and vertical farm operators, the current mandate is to prioritize retail reliability and unit economics over experimental growth.

The retail mandate: Fulfillment as a non-negotiable
Last Wednesday, on the opening day of Indoor Ag-Con, the speakers emphasized that the primary challenge for the modern grower is not just biological success, but the ability to integrate seamlessly into a professional retail ecosystem. Dane Almassy identified a significant gap between the rising costs of inputs, including labor and utilities, and the pressure to maintain flat pricing on the retail shelf.

“The onus is on us to either drive efficiencies within our business and our supply chain or add additional value-added products to retail,” Dane stated. He noted that while retailers were once willing to trial any indoor-grown product, they now expect the same reliability as traditional field-grown supply chains. “The growth within leafy greens or strawberries is going to be predicated by those that have the operational excellence and the capital to support the growth, but ultimately build the trust relationship with the retailer so that you can be counted on to truly replace what is being sourced from the field today.”

Josh McClung supported this assessment, noting that retailers are increasingly looking for partners who can deliver “on time and in full” (OTIF). He remarked on the industry’s historical struggle with consistency: “We’ve had such a negative halo in this industry over the past five years, with lots of people coming with lots of cool tech and not focused on the core priority—and that’s service me on time, service me in full, and service me with a high-quality product.”

The transition from a “tech industry” to a “produce industry” has forced growers to confront harsh operational realities. “We’re not a tech industry. We use tech to enable the growing of a lot of our products, but some of the companies came in and did not understand the importance of day-to-day delivering the freshest, highest-quality product consistently,” agreed Tom.

Jesper Hansen believes this to be one of the causes of the slow adoption of indoor-grown lettuce in retail, which, instead of taking a few years, took a decade. “Or more, as we haven’t really been adopted yet. We carry part of the blame ourselves, because the qualities that we know we can deliver, we didn’t really deliver. Sometimes, the retailer just sticks with their safe horses. I think that as we grow as an industry, we become better at running the farms and providing that quality consistently, and retail adoption will be wider and wider.”

Virginia Governor Visits $100 Million Tomato Greenhouse Project in Carroll County

Last week, Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin and Secretary of Agriculture and Forestry Matthew Lohr visited the construction site of the 65-acre tomato greenhouse in Carroll County, Virginia. The facility, known as Pluck’d Greenhouse, is currently under development with contributions from Dalsem – Complete Greenhouse Projects, Voorwinden Group, and Kind Farm Services.

“Big win for Southwest Virginia! Pluck’d is investing over $100 million to build its first U.S.-based plant, creating 250 jobs in Carroll County and bringing fresh opportunity to the region”, said Youngkin.

The visit included remarks from the newly appointed Pluck’d CEO Ben Alexander. His background is with Oasthouse Ventures, the UK firm developing the project. “It has been nearly 3 years since moving to the USA for this project and I am delighted with the progress that has been made. Ground up construction started in May 2025, the structure is built, the glass is now on and we will be in stores in March 2026. With special thanks to Oasthouse Ventures Limited Dalsem – Complete Greenhouse Projects, CEAd by Larssen, Mount Rogers Regional Partnership and many others for making this a reality”, he shared.

USDA Offers $100M for Local Food and Specialty Crops

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has announced two major grant funding opportunities totaling nearly $100 million to support local, regional, and specialty crop markets across the United States. These initiatives, administered through the Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS), aim to enhance the competitiveness of specialty crops and strengthen local food systems.

The Local Agriculture Market Program (LAMP) offers $26.5 million in grant funding to help local and regional food entities develop, coordinate, and expand producer-to-consumer marketing, local and regional food markets, and local food enterprises. LAMP includes three components: the Farmers Market Promotion Program (FMPP), the Local Food Promotion Program (LFPP), and the Regional Food System Partnerships (RFSP). Each program targets different aspects of local food markets. The FMPP focuses on direct producer-to-consumer markets, such as farmers markets, roadside stands, agritourism, community-supported agriculture (CSA), and online sales. The LFPP supports local and regional food businesses that act as intermediaries in indirect producer-to-consumer marketing, such as shared-use kitchens, food hubs, and food incubators. The RFSP fosters public-private partnerships, connecting local and regional producers with processors, intermediaries, and institutional markets.

 

Grant applications for LAMP must be submitted through www.grants.gov by June 27, 2025. A 25% cost share is required, which may be met through cash or in-kind contributions for FMPP and LFPP, while RFSP requires a cash contribution. AMS will provide webinars to guide new applicants and has made frequently asked questions and grants management support available.

In addition to LAMP, USDA has made $72.9 million available through the Specialty Crop Block Grant Program (SCBGP), supporting projects that enhance the competitiveness of specialty crops, including fruits, vegetables, tree nuts, dried fruits, horticulture, floriculture, and nursery crops. This program is open to agricultural agencies and departments of agriculture in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Guam, American Samoa, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands. Participating states and territories will subaward funding to locally led projects. SCBGP is funded through the 2018 Farm Bill, with allocations determined by a formula that considers specialty crop acreage and production value.
