‘It’s Not When, It’s Again’: An Ag-Cybersecurity Pioneer on Getting CEA Operations Ready for the Unthinkable

Andrew Rose has spent nearly a decade trying to convince the agriculture sector that a cyberattack can shut down an operation as fast as an equipment failure—and he’s not optimistic that most operators are there yet. As an advisor at BIO-ISAC and a longtime voice on cyberbiosecurity in food and ag, Rose has watched threats evolve from opportunistic ransomware to targeted corporate espionage aimed at proprietary genetics, automation IP, and production data. In this month’s Indoor Ag-Content Q&A, Rose explains why “secure-by-design” thinking needs to start on day one of any CEA build-out, why untested backups aren’t really backups at all, and why the industry’s next decade of risk may come down to a very old-fashioned question: what happens when the internet doesn’t work? Rose will expand on these themes as a speaker in the session Data Management and Cyber Security in CEA at CEA Summit East this September in Danville, VA.

You started raising cybersecurity awareness in the ag sector back in 2016, well before most people were connecting the words “farming” and “cybercrime.” What did you see back then that made you realize agriculture was an unrecognized target—and how has that threat landscape changed as CEA operations have become more connected and data-driven?

In 2016, I ran a business continuity exercise at a large agricultural lender. A good way to pressure-test an organization is through a realistic crisis exercise. I designed a ransomware scenario that included every “worst-case” element: data exfiltration, encrypted and permanently disabled systems, and a ransom demand. It was enlightening to see the gaps we uncovered in our response plans.

That made me wonder whether the rest of the agricultural sector was equally unprepared. Nearly a decade later, I can confidently say that agriculture is still one of the most under-defended critical industries, and an un-recognized threat by our cyber defenders. Much of my work today remains focused on building basic awareness around cybersecurity threats and counter measures.

An important lesson I learned early on is the importance of secure-by-design thinking. Security shouldn’t be added after a greenhouse is built, a robot is deployed, or software is released, it needs to be high on the list from day one. Every organization should be asking two simple questions: How will we defend our products? and How will we defend ourselves?

Unfortunately, those questions are often overlooked. I’ve had CEOs tell me everything from, “I hadn’t even considered security,” to, “We know it’s an issue, but we’re waiting until our next funding round to address it.” Those responses make me shake my head and feel the blood run a little colder in my veins.

Today’s threat environment extends far beyond ransomware. Corporate espionage is white-hot, with competitors (team on team), organized criminal groups, and even nation-state actors seeking proprietary genetics, automation technologies, production methods, and to pick up a crippled company’s assets for pennies on the dollar. You are a target.

A lot of growers assume cybersecurity is an “IT problem” for banks and retailers, not something that applies to a greenhouse or vertical farm. What’s actually at stake for a CEA operator if their systems are compromised, and why should that risk be top of mind for someone running a growing operation—not just their IT vendor?

For a controlled environment agriculture operation, a cyberattack can directly threaten production. Environmental controls, irrigation systems, lighting schedules, nutrient delivery, climate management, inventory records, food safety documentation, and customer information all depend on connected systems. If those systems become unavailable or are manipulated, entire crops can be lost within hours or days.

For operations with narrow margins, a disruption can fast become a financial crisis. Beyond replacing hardware or recovering data, companies must also rebuild trust with customers, distributors, insurers, and regulators. Without accurate production and traceability records, it may be impossible to move products into the marketplace.

Another consideration is cyber insurance. Many policies now require organizations to demonstrate basic cyber hygiene: multi-factor authentication (MFA), strong password management, network segmentation, regular patching, and secure backups. If those fundamental safeguards weren’t in place, insurance coverage may be reduced or denied.

The organizations that recover most successfully are those that recognize cybersecurity isn’t solely an IT responsibility. Operations, management, communications, legal, and executive leadership all have roles to play. Without a practiced recovery plan, valuable time is often lost assigning blame rather than restoring operations.

Can you tell readers a little about BIO-ISAC and the work you do there? How does the organization approach threat awareness and information-sharing specifically for the bioeconomy, and what does that look like in practice for a food and ag business trying to stay ahead of adversaries?

The BIO-ISAC was founded after recognizing that significant portions of the bioeconomy were being overlooked by traditional cybersecurity efforts. Originally, the term bioeconomy referred primarily to agriculture, forestry, and marine industries. Today, it encompasses the broader life sciences ecosystem, from ag production, biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, diagnostics, and related sectors.

Our mission is to improve the cyberbiosecurity and resilience of organizations that rely on biological systems.

We accomplish this in several ways. We share timely threat intelligence with our members, publish public advisories, provide incident response support, and serve as a trusted safe harbor for responsible vulnerability disclosure. If a researcher or company discovers a cybersecurity vulnerability in a product or system, BIO-ISAC helps coordinate responsible reporting with the appropriate vendors and stakeholders.

In many cases, organizations contact us after experiencing a cyber incident. Occasionally, we identify malicious activity affecting a member before they’re even aware of it. Either way, our goal is to provide practical support, technical expertise, and trusted information-sharing that helps limit damage and improve resilience.

The single best recommendation I give organizations is to rehearse the unthinkable.

Assume you’ve been hacked. Your systems are offline. Production has stopped. Customers are calling. Criminals are demanding payment. Then ask your team: What happens next? Who’s in charge?

Running tabletop exercises with both leadership and operational staff exposes gaps before a real crisis occurs. It builds muscle memory, clarifies decision-making, and significantly reduces the confusion that follows a cyberattack. BIO-ISAC regularly works with agricultural and life science organizations to conduct these exercises because preparedness is one of the most effective forms of cybersecurity.

CEA operators would be wise to review the checklist we provided to Indoor-Ag and hold their vendors accountable. Simple questions like: Does this have a password? and How can I change it? are a good start.

The old saying was, “It’s not if, it’s when.” Today, it’s more accurate to say, “It’s not when, it’s again.” Plan accordingly.

The CEA Summit East session you’ll be part of will touch on “practical strategies” for data management that keep records audit-ready and operations running without interruption. Can you share one habit or safeguard you see too many CEA operators skipping—and what would you tell a grower who wants to get their house in order but doesn’t know where to start?

The most overlooked safeguard is one of the simplest: reliable, tested backups.

Many organizations assume they’re backing up their data, but they’ve never actually verified that those backups can be restored quickly. A backup you can’t recover isn’t really a backup.

Critical operational data should follow the 3-2-1 principle: maintain multiple copies, store them on different types of media, and keep at least one copy offline or otherwise isolated from your primary network. Adversaries frequently target backup systems first because they know organizations are more likely to pay a ransom if recovery isn’t possible.

I also encourage organizations to remember that some information is perfectly acceptable to keep offline. Paper records can’t be hacked, and removable drives that are disconnected from the network provide an important layer of resilience.

Ask yourself a few simple questions:

  • If all of your systems disappeared today, when was your last successful backup?
  • How long would it take to recover your data?
  • How long before production returned to normal?

If you don’t know those answers, that’s where you should start. Make backups routine, automate them whenever possible, and regularly test that you can restore them successfully.

You describe yourself as an agricultural futurist focused on a world for people whose parents haven’t been born yet. As connectivity, automation, and data collection keep expanding in CEA, where do you see the biggest cybersecurity blind spots emerging in the next five to ten years—and what should the industry be doing now to get ahead of them?

The most significant change over the next decade will be the continued expansion of artificial intelligence, both as a defensive tool and as a weapon for cybercriminals.

AI allows attackers to automate reconnaissance, identify vulnerabilities, and launch attacks against thousands of organizations simultaneously. Criminal groups increasingly use AI-powered tools to gain initial access, then sell that access to ransomware operators or other malicious actors.

AI has also dramatically increased the effectiveness of social engineering. Deepfake audio and video have become convincing enough to damage reputations, manipulate employees, and create confusion during a crisis. It’s easy to imagine a future where a fabricated video appears to show a CEA executive admitting contaminated products were shipped or making statements that never occurred. The technical barriers to producing that content continues to fall.

As an agricultural futurist, the further I look, the more analog it gets.

Modern agriculture depends on digital infrastructure that most take for granted: GPS timing, internet connectivity, cloud services, electronic payments, and automated logistics. Those systems work so reliably that we’ve forgotten they’re potential points of failure.

If geopolitical conflict or a major infrastructure disruption were to affect GPS or internet availability, how would a CEA operation continue functioning? Could deliveries still be made? Could employees navigate with paper maps and do they have them? Can you process payments in a non-digital fashion? Could production continue without cloud connectivity? Do you still have manual operating procedures, paper documentation, or legacy equipment that functions independently of the internet? More importantly, does anyone still know how to use them?

It pays to be prepared.

‘Train Them to Leave’: AFA’s Lillian Chapman on Building the CEA Talent Pipeline

The CEA industry is growing fast — but a strong workforce won’t build itself. Lillian Chapman, Development Manager at Agriculture Future of America (AFA), has spent her career building connections between young talent and the agriculture industry, and she’s seen firsthand what happens when those pathways don’t exist. In this month’s Q&A, Lillian shares how AFA is working to close the workforce gap through experiential learning, intentional mentorship, and industry collaboration — and what CEA operators can do right now to get involved. Lillian will bring these conversations to CEA Summit East this September as a panelist in the Special Presentation: Strengthening the Workforce Ecosystem.

For readers who may not be familiar with Agriculture Future of America, can you give us an overview of the organization — who it serves, what it does, and why it exists?

Agriculture Future of America is a 501c3 non-profit that builds bridges for young leaders, fostering engagement and innovation in food and agriculture. We work with more than 200 different colleges and universities alongside over 100 industry partners to create experiential learning opportunities across the nation. We exist for students (like myself circa 2014) to be able to push themselves to explore career paths, roles and companies they would not traditionally interact with in their day-to-day lives. We do this through 6 Leader Institutes and our keystone AFA Leaders Conference. These events are held across the country in diverse industry segments to provide insight to students on what skills, experiences and competencies employers are actually looking for. More than 80% of our alumni work in agriculture and food after graduation, showing that if you invest in the right young leaders at the right time, the entire industry benefits

CEA is a relatively young industry, and the talent pipeline is still catching up. From AFA’s perspective, where are the biggest gaps right now — and what does a stronger workforce ecosystem actually look like?

Whether it be traditional agronomic practices, equipment operators or CEA growers – we have to invest in young people’s experiences. Agriculture was traditionally an industry that every household participated in, because our food systems were locally based. After the 1970s and 80s we started to see a sharp decline in the number of people directly related to production agriculture. Currently, today it’s around 1% of the population (all statistics I’m sure you’ve heard before). What that means for the talent pipeline is less experienced growers, operators and managers. The only way these students or potential employees can benefit your organization in the long term is if you have hands-on experiential learning programs built in your on-boarding strategy. In some places this could look like seeking talent coming out of programs like AFA or previous internships. In others it may be partnership with local technical or community college programs (Durham Tech, Reynolds, Alamance Community College, etc.) or it may be creating a rotational program that meets your organization where it is. A stronger workforce ecosystem needs three things:

  1. AFANetworking Opportunities – Everything in life is built through people’s connections to one another. Students no longer have a corner store or local grower in their life to make introductions. We have to be intentional about showing up in places students are and building connections with them.
  2. EXPERIENCES – I can’t say this loud enough. You cannot expect young talent (whether students or lateral entry talent) to know it all on day one. Let them learn and let them fail in a strategic way, or they will be failing your business when it costs the bottom line instead.
  3. Conversation – Just like CEA Summit in September, we need to have everyone at the table having conversations about the talent pipeline. Where is it lacking? What are we seeing as a whole? Are there places to learn from other organization’s successes or failures?

At the end of the day, the future of CEA talent depends on how intentionally we create access, build experience and bring the right people together to prepare the next generation of growers, operators, and leaders.

AFA works across a wide range of agriculture sectors. How does controlled environment agriculture fit into that mix, and are you seeing more interest from CEA operators looking to connect with the next generation of talent?

CEA is the future of food systems. We have entire AFA programs built on sustainability and food systems of the future. We even reorganized our AFA Crop Science Institute to AFA Plant Science Institute, because there is such a demand for non-traditional plant science now. While, as a greenhouse and traditional grower I see there is still room for improvement, especially with how we approach markets/marketing our products as CEA growers – talent is going to continue to be the second limiting factor to the equation. CEA operators are already seeking how to find the right mix of seasonal, full-time, H2A/B and legacy employees. I think the next generation of talent check some of those boxes and ultimately help solve the labor equation as a whole.

Though CEA isn’t considered a traditional agriculture practice, a lot of larger ag companies have been using it for research purposes for years. They have already built successful employees from students that wanted to be in agriculture in a different capacity. As we continue to see this segment grow, we will see an increased demand for those non-traditional ag/food students. They exist and are just waiting for the right opportunity to come along.

AFAYou’ve worked across a wide range of ag sectors yourself — from John Deere dealerships to land trusts — and now you’re building a greenhouse nursery business on your family’s farm in North Carolina. How does that breadth of experience shape the way you think about career development and what young people need to be prepared for in this industry?

I probably should write a book about the many adventures I have been on in my short lifetime, but honestly that is the story of most folks in agriculture now days. Individuals are no longer staying at organizations for 15-20 years or until retirement. They are being pushed to make more money by changing roles every 3-5 years or less. While that model of employment isn’t what most employers like to see, it’s the reality in this day and age. Career paths are no longer linear, so we need to pour into transferable skills. Good employees want to grow and have the opportunity. “Train them to leave” is one of the best principles I have ever learned (thanks to NCSU Agricultural Business program!). If you pour into your employees and develop young people in a way that keeps them passionate about what they are doing – your business will have less turnover. At the same time, not everyone is meant to be a manager, so how you allow for growth without pushing people into management can be a key piece to employee satisfaction overall.

In all those roles, I have worked with and managed young people from high school level to about 30 years old. The key theme I noticed when hiring successful employees was understanding their strengths and weaknesses at a deeper level as a person. No matter if I needed them to be able to take apart an 8R tractor and put it back together or go build a hiking trail or answer the phone or run a cash register at the farm stand – if I mismatched their passion and strengths to the tasks I had them doing, we were destined for failure. Back to my point above, give employees controlled onboarding experiences, so you can let them fail in a way that sets them up for success. Be available to answer questions, show 1-1 mentorship where you can or give them a buddy in the environment, so when you task them with hard projects, they have the tools to succeed. More than anything – don’t expect it to happen on day 1.

For CEA growers and operators reading this — what’s the most practical way for them to engage with AFA, and what do you hope they take away from your panel at CEA Summit East in September?

For CEA growers and operators, the most practical way to engage with AFA is to come see the talent pipeline for yourself. AFA offers a free VIP experience where industry leaders can meet the students we convene, experience the quality of programming firsthand and start a conversation about what involvement could look like for their organization. That engagement does not have to begin with a major investment. It can start in a very practical ways, such as reviewing student applications, volunteering your time or hosting students for an experiential learning opportunity in their area. As an AFA partner, your organization has the opportunity to shape future leaders. CEA is growing quickly, and the workforce needed to support that growth will require more than technical knowledge alone. It will require young professionals who understand food systems, technology, leadership and adaptability. At CEA Summit East in September, I hope growers and operators walk away with a stronger understanding of how many talented young people are interested in this space, and how much opportunity exists when industry leaders are willing to meet them, mentor them and invite them into the conversation. My hope is that the panel helps CEA leaders think beyond immediate hiring needs and consider the future culture we are building across the industry. If we want a strong, sustainable CEA workforce, we have to be intentional about creating access, offering hands-on experiences, and building relationships between students, educators, growers, operators and industry partners. There is tremendous knowledge in this room, and the more we share it with the next generation, the stronger our organizations and our industry will be.

From Seed to Scale: How Fork Farms Turned a Mission into a Movement

Fork Farms founder and CEO Alex Tyink built his Green Bay, Wisconsin-based company on a deceptively simple idea: that growing your own food changes your relationship with it — and that everyone, from a third-grader in Milwaukee to a food pantry volunteer in rural Wisconsin, deserves the chance to experience that. In this month’s Indoor Ag-Conversations Q&A, Tyink talks about where hydroponic growing is gaining real traction in schools, healthcare systems, and hunger relief organizations; what the landmark Clock Tower Farms project signals about the future of food-as-infrastructure; and what it really takes to scale a mission-driven company without losing the thread.

Fork Farms has installed Flex Farms in schools, food banks, healthcare systems, and commercial operations — a pretty wide footprint. When you look across all those use cases, where are you seeing the most momentum right now, and what’s driving it?

We are seeing momentum across all of those areas, but the common thread is clear: institutions are starting to understand that fresh food access is infrastructure.

Fork Farms has partnered with more than 5,000 institutions across 50 states and 22 countries. Together, those partners can grow nearly 2 million pounds of fresh food annually, and many are growing food for under $1 per pound. This matters because it means local food production can be practical, measurable, and economically competitive.

Schools have been especially powerful because they bring education, nutrition, and community impact together in one place. When students plant, grow, harvest, and taste food themselves, fresh greens become less abstract. They understand where food comes from. They take ownership in the process. Eating becomes exciting, because they fostered every step of growing their meal. From planting to care, to harvesting and plating the food for their families and friends, they got to be part of the process, which is different in how today’s food systems operate.

That matters because many children receive some of their most nutritious meals at school. When a school can grow fresh food on-site, use it in the cafeteria, connect it to curriculum, and sometimes even send food home with families, the impact becomes very real.

Milwaukee Public Schools is a strong example. The district has 86 Flex Farms from Fork Farms, more than any other district in the world. Teachers use them as hands-on learning labs, and the farms also support fresh food access for students during meal times. In early 2026, MPS commissioned a 60-day indoor air quality study authored by a Certified Industrial Hygienist. Classrooms with hydroponic farms outperformed plant-free classrooms on key measures, including lower CO₂, lower formaldehyde, and healthier winter humidity. In that case, the farms are supporting learning, nutrition, and the classroom environment.

At the same time, the momentum is bigger than schools. Food banks are looking for more reliable ways to provide fresh, nutrient-dense food. Healthcare systems are connecting food to wellness and illness prevention. Corporate and commercial partners are asking how their buildings, teams, and resources can create measurable community value.

The Wisconsin PureGrow Project is a good example of that intersection. Fork Farms partnered with the University of Wisconsin–Stevens Point at Marshfield and Sanford Health Marshfield Clinic Health System to create a model that supports students, patients, and staff at the same time. The facility operates six Flex Acre™ systems and two Flex Micros™ systems, and grows more than 100 pounds of fresh food weekly. Independent lab analysis found that the romaine grown there exceeded benchmarks for nutrient density and purity, including 83 percent more magnesium and 65 percent more calcium than conventionally grown lettuce.

The momentum is not coming from one vertical alone. It is coming from a broader shift in how institutions think about food. Organizations are no longer just asking, “Can we grow food indoors?” They are asking, “How can we use this technology to solve a real problem in our community?” That is exactly the kind of future we built Fork Farms to help create.

The recently announced Clock Tower Farms project with Feeding America Eastern Wisconsin and Rockwell Automation is a big deal: 72 Flex Acre systems, 200,000 pounds of projected annual production, automation technology layered on top of your growing systems. What does a partnership like that teach you about what’s possible when hydroponic growing gets paired with industrial-scale automation?

Clock Tower Farms shows what becomes possible when fresh food production is treated as infrastructure and as a serious solution to hunger relief.

The farm is located on the fourth floor of Rockwell Automation’s Milwaukee headquarters. It takes unused office space and turns it into a year-round indoor farm serving the local community. Inside that space, 72 Flex Acre™ systems from Fork Farms will operate in a fully controlled growing environment with the capacity to produce up to 200,000 pounds of fresh produce annually. That is enough for a side salad for more than 38,500 people every week.

Fork FarmsWhat makes the project so important is the combination of strengths. Fork Farms brings the hydroponic growing systems. Rockwell brings industrial-scale automation. Feeding America Eastern Wisconsin brings the distribution network to get fresh food to the people who need it most. Together, that creates a model where food can be grown reliably, locally, and at a meaningful scale inside an existing building.

It also shows that the impact goes well beyond production volume. Clock Tower Farms saves 5.9 million gallons of water compared to traditional farming, and conserves the equivalent of 5.5 acres of conventional farmland.

What it teaches me is that the future of hydroponic growing is not just about better farms. It is about better systems. When growing technology, automation, and community partners are aligned, we can make fresh food production more predictable, efficient, and resilient. That is how we move from small demonstrations of what is possible to scalable food infrastructure that can serve communities in a lasting way.

A lot of your installations are in the hands of people who aren’t professional growers — teachers, food pantry volunteers, hospital dining staff. How did Fork Farms design the Flex Farm experience to work for that audience, and what does “ease of use” actually look like in practice?

We designed the Flex Farm experience around a simple belief: everyone can be a farmer.

You do not need to be a professional farmer, horticulturist, or controlled-environment agriculture expert to participate in the food system. At Fork Farms, we exist to democratize access to fresh food by making local food production practical at scale. We do that by growing farmers. By farmers, I mean teachers, food service teams, pantry volunteers, healthcare staff, students, residents, community members and more.

That belief shaped the design from the beginning. The system had to fit into real buildings, work with existing teams, and become part of a simple daily or weekly rhythm. Ease of use looks like clear setup, straightforward planting and harvesting, simple maintenance, and ongoing support so people feel confident instead of overwhelmed.

It also had to be modular. This is not a one-size-fits-all approach. Some partners start with a single Flex Farm in a classroom, cafeteria, or dining space. Others build larger programs across a district, healthcare system, corporate campus, or community food network. And then you have projects like Clock Tower Farms with Rockwell Automation and Feeding America Eastern Wisconsin, where the same core idea scales into a much larger food production model.

That range matters because one of the barriers to entry in this space has always been the belief that indoor agriculture is either too technical, too expensive, or too difficult to operate. We are trying to teach the market that local food production can start small, grow over time, and scale in a way that fits the space, budget, and goals of each partner.

Food access is not only about putting fresh food in more places. It is about making the growing process workable for the people already serving their communities. That is why the farm itself is only one part of what we provide.

Fork Farms supports partners well beyond installation. We help with launch support, early crop success checks, programming, K-12 and higher education curriculum, environmental impact data, communications tools, and ongoing farm management support. We also help partners build practical programs around the farm, from local food integration and plant-forward menu planning to community giving models, STEM education, wellness programming, marketing, storytelling, and impact reporting.

The goal is to give people the tools, systems, and confidence to grow fresh food right where it is needed. Instead of food traveling 1,500 miles by truck, it can move from seed to plate just steps from where it is grown, served, and shared. That is what makes the experience powerful. It invites more people into the solution.

Fork Farms leads with a strong mission around food access and community impact — but you’re also a technology company growing a commercial business. How do those two sides of the organization reinforce each other, and how does mission shape the decisions you make on the business side?

At Fork Farms, we believe everyone deserves access to fresh, nutritious food, no matter their zip code. We believe food should be grown more locally, sustainably, and equitably. We believe food can be a powerful part of health and wellness. And we believe nutrition security means more than calories. It means access to healthy, nutrient-rich food that supports long-term well-being.

For us, the mission and the business are not separate. They have to reinforce each other.

Fork Farms exists to make fresh food more accessible, and technology is how we make that practical at scale. The mission gives us the reason to build. The business gives us the structure, discipline, and reach to make the impact bigger than any one installation, pilot, or grant-funded program.

That shapes how we make decisions. We are always asking: Does this make growing food easier? Does it make fresh food more affordable? Can it work in real institutions with real people, real budgets, and real operational constraints? Can it create measurable value for the community and for the organization investing in it?

Being mission-driven does not mean ignoring business fundamentals. It means being clear about which fundamentals matter. We care about cost per pound, labor efficiency, reliability, training, customer success, and long-term program sustainability because those are the things that allow the mission to last. If a school, hospital, food bank, or corporate partner cannot operate the program successfully over time, then we have not truly solved the problem.

What’s the most important thing you’ve learned about scaling a mission-driven company without losing what made it work in the first place?

The biggest lesson is that you have to scale the system without diluting the purpose.

Fast growth is exciting, but it also tests what is real. It forces you to get clearer about what you believe, who you serve, and what you are willing to say no to. For us, the center has always been food access. The company can grow, the technology can evolve, and the partnerships can get larger, but the reason we exist has to stay clear.

As we scale, we have had to build more discipline into the business: stronger teams, better processes, clearer data, more reliable support, and more repeatable customer models. That structure matters because it allows the mission to move beyond passion and become something that can last.

The hard part is making sure scale does not turn the work into a transaction. A Flex Farm in a classroom, food pantry, hospital, or corporate campus still has to feel connected to people. It still has to create ownership, confidence, and real access to fresh food.

The most important thing I have learned is that mission-driven growth requires both heart and rigor. You need the purpose that brought people to the table in the first place, and you need the operational discipline to keep delivering on that purpose at scale. That balance is what protects what made Fork Farms work in the first place.

Tissue Culture Is A Labor of Learning

Della Fetzer built Rebel Cultures with a calibrated view of tissue culture: it works, but only when it’s the right tool and used correctly. As founder and CEO of the Michigan-based tissue culture lab, Fetzer works across conservation, agriculture, forestry, and horticulture to help growers, nonprofits, and government agencies complete specialized projects and build lasting propagation capacity. After moderating Indoor Ag-Con’s first dedicated tissue culture session in February 2026, she talked with us about what growers consistently misunderstand, why the industry’s genetic concentration deserves more attention, and what honest expectations look like for operations considering tissue culture for the first time.

 

Many CEA operators are exploring higher-value crops like berries, wasabi, and specialty ornamentals, but struggle with clean, consistent starting material. How does tissue culture specifically solve those pain points & what should a grower realistically expect in terms of timelines and costs when they first engage a lab partner like Rebel Cultures?

When done right and cared for properly, tissue culture can effectively remove three key threats from a grower’s operation: pathogens in starting material, growth inconsistency, and the inability to scale without exponential cost. Of course, removing these threats isn’t free. The costs are typically higher prices for starter material, a steeper learning curve to properly harden (or “acclimatize”) early stage tissue culture plants, and longer lead times before consistent propagation starts.

Expect 6 to 12 months for the first trial and production batches after tasking a lab with a new project. If the lab already has the cultivars you need in stock (and the license to propagate them for you), the timeline may be shorter depending on the lab’s availability and production capacity. Also expect costs to range wildly from $0.50 to several dollars per plant based on plant type, order volume, ordered stage, and even seasonal timing.

At Rebel Cultures specifically, we work with growers to build propagation capacity for custom projects. This means we offer personalized education and production flexibility while growers are still testing multiple solutions, before we hand the protocol off to the grower’s own internal operations or a dedicated production lab.

Most commercial CEA operations source genetics from a handful of large suppliers and crop breeders. What does that concentration mean for the industry’s long-term vulnerability?

It’s an interesting question. The short answer is: more crop biodiversity means lower risk of plant disease outbreaks, and more suppliers means lower risk of supply chain collapse. One of the biggest concerns with the current market is many labs’ reliance on antibiotic additives in plant growth media, which may be weakening plants over time. Currently, the use of these additives is not required to be disclosed to growers. It’s impractical to avoid monocrops in agriculture or CEA, but it’s important to approach the risk responsibly. Since monocrops are a high risk, high reward bet, we can remind ourselves that it’s only a matter of time before high risk bets become expensive. To manage this risk exposure, growers and the greater CEA industry need to be proactive through diversification of crops and suppliers.

On a practical level, growers should keep trying new cultivars and crops. If you’re sourcing from one lab, have a backup lab set up and consider placing orders with them occasionally. If you have high-value genetic lines, consider banking them at multiple facilities. Our team at Rebel Cultures mitigates risk by maintaining multiple lines of each cultivar, cycled at different times, in case of a rare equipment or operator incident. It’s the kind of insurance no one wants to pay for until they need it.

There’s some confusion in the CEA space about when tissue culture makes sense versus other propagation methods. What are the clearest signs that a grower or operation is ready (or not ready) to incorporate tissue culture into their supply chain, and what are the most common mistakes you see operators make when they jump in too early?

If an operation is struggling with availability of starting material, pathogens, consistency, or scaled production, and isn’t scared by paying a higher price per starter plant, tissue culture is worth a try. Purchasing culture plants to test it is relatively low risk. The plants are unlikely to spread pathogens to other crops unless they’re from an untrustworthy lab or a pathogen like powdery mildew is contracted and transmitted inside an operation. The greatest risks are that growers could struggle learning how to properly care for the immature plants and could see higher losses than usual at first.

The bigger mistake I see is growers looking at the price of tissue culture, doing some napkin math about how much cheaper or even lucrative it would be to set up their own lab, then buying equipment and supplies they don’t know how to use without visiting other labs and seeking quality mentorship. This is one of the fastest ways to lose thousands of dollars in the industry. It’s why there’s so much used, nearly new tissue culture equipment on the market.

That said, if you’re dedicated to the process, willing to spend the high upfront cost, okay with it taking over a year to produce anything worthwhile, and willing to ask for help from professionals, in-house tissue culture can unlock unique propagation opportunities. Anyone who gets into it for cash alone will probably be disappointed. Tissue culture is a labor of learning.

Rebel Cultures works across conservation, forestry, agriculture, and horticulture. How does cross-industry learning translate into better outcomes for your CEA and commercial agriculture partners? Can you give an example where a method or insight from conservation work improved a commercial growing project?

As we’ve seen in CEA, it’s a detriment to only know one crop. If you only know the lettuce industry, the tomato industry, or the strawberry industry, you’re automatically more at risk than an operator who understands all three. We take this to the extreme at Rebel Cultures by consistently working on projects across multiple industries. This gives us the broadest possible cross section of best practices, from communication, to growing, to funding, to scaling plant production.

One example: we learned about best acclimatization practices from an ornamental woody plant grower, then used that knowledge to help acclimatize rare trees for a nonprofit forestry grower, who taught us about grant funding for tissue culture propagation. We built on that to help another grower apply for grant funding to develop a supply chain with properly acclimatized rhubarb, dramatically reducing their potential out-of-pocket R&D costs while positioning to help other specialty crop growers bring new crops online. Specialty crop agriculture is declining 2x faster in my home state of Michigan than the US national average, so opportunities like these to support growers in building propagation and funding capacity are critical for the industry to survive.

Working across industries also keeps our perspective calibrated. Our team only recommends tissue culture when it’s the right tool to achieve a project’s mission. Depending on the industry, tissue culture gets seen as an old boring tool to optimize, a novelty too expensive to justify, or an exciting new angle to monetize. Instead of any one of those, we see it as a tool for building high-impact propagation capacity when other methods underperform.

You moderated the first dedicated tissue culture session at Indoor Ag-Con 2026. What was the conversation in that room that surprised you most? And, based on where the CEA industry is heading, what do you think the tissue culture conversation will look like at Indoor Ag-Con five years from now?

It was an honor and a blast to moderate Indoor Ag-Con’s first tissue culture session alongside three industry experts: Hsien Easlon from Micro Paradox, Rinnie Rodenius from Polymorph, and Micah Stevens from Sierra Gold Nurseries. Between the four of us, we shared 62 years of tissue culture experience across 1,400+ cultivars – how could it not be a fun and educational conversation?

The assumption I heard which surprised and scared me most was when both novices and those with moderate experience talked about tissue culture as if it’s guaranteed to eliminate pathogens. The reality is that certain pathogens, and sometimes even pests, can survive the tissue culture initiation process. Whether you’re working with plants suspected to be clean or known to be infected, pre-tissue culture pathogen indexing of source material is a recommended best practice. It gives labs a complete picture of plant health before the process starts. And when culturing infected plants to eliminate pathogens, testing quarantined plantlets post-tissue culture is essential before those plants go anywhere near others.

In five years, as lessons are learned and margins tighten, the efficient and passionate labs will endure, grow, and continue adding value to the industry while others fall away. Conversations around tissue culture in CEA will gradually become less sensational and more practical, where tissue culture is the trusted solution for overcoming pathogens and scaling bottlenecks. We’re meant to grow interesting crops on our farms and see interesting foods at the market. Without them, life would be sad and boring. Ultimately, the CEA industry will see tissue culture for what it is: a tool for building high-impact propagation capacity when other methods can’t meet critical goals.

Growing Opportunity: How the Drew Horticulture Program Is Cultivating Skills, Confidence—and Fresh Produce—in Detroit

At the Charles R. Drew Transition Center in Detroit, horticulture is more than a class—it’s a pathway to independence, employment skills, and community impact. Under the leadership of horticulture instructor Michael Craig, the Drew Horticulture Program has grown into one of the nation’s largest school-based Farm-to-School horticulture programs, combining hydroponic and traditional growing systems to produce thousands of pounds of fresh food each year. Students with a wide range of disabilities participate in every step of the process—from seeding and cultivation to harvesting and sales—supplying produce to school cafeterias, local markets, and even Detroit’s fine-dining restaurants. In this Q&A, Michael shares how controlled environment agriculture is creating meaningful opportunities for students while demonstrating how inclusive agricultural programs can thrive.

For readers who may not be familiar with the Charles R. Drew Transition Center, can you describe the mission of the school and how the Drew Horticulture Program fits into its broader goal of preparing students for independent living and employment?

 Charles Drew Transition CenterIt is the mission of the Drew Horticulture Program for all students to have access to materials and programs to learn, develop and participate in obtaining the skills of Horticulture through planting, management, consumption and sales of vegetables and flowers. Through interactive methods carefully designed around students’ specific disabilities and to allow for maximum involvement and skill development, the Gardens at Drew has become the model for the nation in the methodology and programs developed to educate center-based special education students in the areas of Horticulture Science. As is the mission of our school, the objectives of the Gardens at Drew center around the development of a comprehensive program to allow each student to gain functional independence and/or job readiness skills in the production, consumption and sale of food and food-related products.

For context, the Drew Transition Center provides work skills education in a wide variety of methods, with student growth being the focus. Teachers at Drew run a gamut of specialized programs such as laundry, our school store, the Cozy Café, our Copy Center, Woodworking program, Horticulture and more. These programs are designed to provide an avenue for the acquisition of skills for possible placement in our work-based learning program, then for possible employment and/or functional independence. For example, students in our laundry classes learn to wash and fold clothing and towels, transitioning to a work-based program at Henry Ford Hospital where they wash and fold scrubs. We realize that actual hands-on skill development is the primary method of successful learning for special needs students, and we try to create as many avenues for success as we can.

You’ve built one of the largest school-based Farm-to-School horticulture program in the country. How did the Drew Horticulture Program get started, and how has it evolved into the large-scale operation it is today?

The vision for the Drew Horticulture Program began in the fall of 2012 during a meeting betwen myself, our principal, Robert Avedisian, and Detroit Public Schools Community District’s Executive Director of School Nutrition, Betti Wiggins. During that meeting, they outlined a plan to create a horticulture program connected to Senator Debbie Stabenow’s Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010, which allows federal school food funding to support school garden programs where produce grown by students can be used in the school lunch program. The idea was to grow fresh food on the Drew campus both to support healthier meals—helping address issues such as childhood obesity, early-onset diabetes, and hypertension—and to create a hands-on vocational program for Drew students. As a transition center serving young adults ages 18–26 with disabilities, Drew focuses on developing skills that support independence, job readiness, and potential employment.  With my background of involving students throughout my career in community service activities and innovative programming, Mr. Avedisian and Ms. Wiggins wanted me to start and run this highly innovative program.

 Charles Drew Transition CenterDetroit Public Schools Community District’s Drew Horticulture Program is a two-acre farm that produces food for school cafeterias and offers programming for school field trips and other community events. Drew Farm, a production-focused farm operating on the grounds of the Charles R. Drew Transition Center, has grown from one hoophouse to the current seven plus 1.5 acres of outdoor growing space. It is one of the largest Farm-to-School programs in the country. For more than a decade, the students at Drew have been working with in-ground, hydroponic, and aquaponic growing techniques, with the indoor hydroponic operation producing between 2000-3000 heads of leafy greens per month year-round.

The Drew Horticulture Program was conceived as a program where food would be grown on Drew’s almost 3-acre campus to combat childhood obesity, hypertension, and early-onset diabetes through the school lunch program, while at the same time providing much-needed vocational horticulture skills for special-needs students. The Charles R. Drew Transition Center is a postsecondary program for young people with disabilities to access speech, physical, and occupational therapy while learning vocational and daily living skills that may lead to employment and full inclusion into community life. Students in the Drew Horticulture Program assist with harvesting tomatoes and more, clearing the fields, weeding, and other tasks, while also learning how to process and clean vegetables for their school lunch program. The other component of the program consists of the production of both in-ground and hydroponic food products for two high-end Detroit restaurants, Chartreuse and Freya and the Detroit Salsa Company. It also sells produce at Eastern Market, at the stall operated by partner Keep Growing Detroit. All proceeds from the sale of produce return to the program to provide sustainability and viability as the program expands.

The Drew Horticulture Program has become the model for the nation in methodology and programs developed to educate center-based special education students in the areas of horticulture science. The objectives of the program center on helping each student gain functional independence and/or job readiness skills in the production, consumption, and sales of food and food-related products. Drew students, due to their cognitive deficits, do not qualify for standard employment opportunities. The program enables students to work daily to master vocational skills, progress further through an extended school year program, then progress to work-study placements in the community. Student response to their involvement has been amazing, showing their appreciation for the ability to work in the program with increased attendance rates and strong work ethic. Students also are aware that they may end up with an opportunity for a work-based learning position or an employment offer, so the incentive to perform daily is there.

Your program integrates hydroponic and controlled environment agriculture systems—including NFT and Dutch Bucket systems—to grow leafy greens, tomatoes, and peppers year-round. How do students participate in the production process, and what technical and workplace skills do they gain through this hands-on experience?

 Charles Drew Transition CenterIn the daily experience that is the Charles Drew Transition Center, students transition much like a normal high school, with seven hours in the day with each hour dedicated to different work skills programs or functional skill acquisition. All Drew students come with differing disabilities from cognitive deficits, hearing deficits or physical limitations. Knowing this, differentiated instruction happens daily in every class period, with vocational horticulture skills being adapted to students’ ability to accomplish them. For example, I have a class where the level of functionality is extremely low, but they are really good at rote production tasks. They will have the responsibility to place plugs into cell packs, pull weeds, or spread compost or mulch. Other classes can place plants into hydroponic systems, harvest hydroponic plants for processing or pick peppers or tomatoes from the plants. Still more, like my class of Hearing-Impaired students, can do these tasks and more independently. It’s very rewarding for me to be able to watch and only assist as they work together to harvest an entire table, cut the produce, place it tenderly into produce bags then boxes, and transfer to the refrigerator to await transport to the restaurant. Most rewarding, especially since we are a year-round indoor/outdoor program, students pick up on the fact that depending on the season, there is always a task to do, with the reward being the harvesting of food products for our clients.

I think what makes the Drew Horticulture Program unique is that all students, no matter the disability, are taught and can witness totality of skills, from seeding, management and harvest of plants to the return of their instructor on Monday with a check showing the proceeds of their efforts. This entrepreneurial aspect helps students realize that they are part of something special, especially when we receive visitors to the program, and they can talk about what we do.

Drew students grow produce not only for the school lunch program but also for local restaurants and community outlets. How has connecting your students’ work to real customers and markets impacted their confidence, job readiness, and sense of purpose?

I think the real change in students’ viewpoints happened the year we transitioned from being primarily a soil-based operation growing food for the school lunch program to introducing hydroponics as our primary form of growing for fine dining Detroit establishments. Yes, we still employ soil-based growing in the production of Roma Tomatoes, Serrano Peppers and Cilantro for the Detroit Salsa Company, utilizing the skills of rototilling ( a student favorite, especially for the girls who prove they can operate machinery), weeding, composting and season extension practices for developing skills, but the introduction of hydroponic growing was the game-changer. To be able to produce leafy green produce good enough for the finest restaurants is a terrific motivator, and one that I constantly stress by insisting on gloving up to handle seeds, plugs and plants, being meticulous in how we do things to “make our Chef happy.”  The fact that our chef has an open invitation to visit Drew—and often comes to speak with our students about how he uses their greens in his cooking—is incredibly motivating. Winning national awards for our programming has also reinforced that our program is recognized for growing food the right way. So, whether we are growing food for our restaurants or donating to local food pantries, students understand that they are a part of the community through their work in helping to feed their neighbors.

You were named the 2025 Teacher of the Year by the Council for Exceptional Children. Looking ahead, what’s next for the Drew Horticulture Program, and what advice would you offer to other schools or organizations interested in using controlled environment agriculture to create meaningful workforce opportunities for students with disabilities?

Boy, this is a loaded question. The Drew Horticulture Program is fortunate in that we were the recipients of a grant through the Honda North America Foundation. Through this, we were able to install a heat pump system in one of our high tunnels and convert the high tunnel from a soil-based growing program to totally hydroponic one, allowing for expansion of our offerings to restaurant clients with the thought of adding a fourth client. The expansion includes four new NFT systems to go along with four Dutch Bucket systems for Cilantro and Serrano Peppers. We were also able to transition from standard T5 Fluorescent lights to LED lighting for all our NFT units. We have already noticed the difference in product with the adjustable lighting resulting in perfect outputs. With these new additions, we are as close to commercial operation as a school-based program can get.

 Charles Drew Transition CenterAs a leading Farm-to-School/Table program, I am lucky to be a large part of both the urban agriculture and horticultural education scene in Detroit and other areas of the country through speaking engagements. When talking with educators and others in the field, I always give the advice that the use of controlled environment agriculture is perhaps the best thing I have done, for it allows students – regardless of disabilities – the opportunity to do work in the production of food products. Our wheelchair students can do the work of their able-bodied peers because controlled environment agriculture is the difference-maker. I can shut the machine down when harvesting, remove the channels of produce, and place it at a level where they can reach to experience the delight of an outstanding harvest. This same technique can be applied to the placement of plants into the system. So, when a student who happens to be in a wheelchair due to their disability has the same opportunity as others to demonstrate work skills, the playing field becomes leveled.

For schools or organizations thinking of adding controlled environment agriculture to their programs, I would advise starting small, see how it goes, have a purpose for the future, and go for it!

You joined Local Bounti at a pivotal moment for the company and the industry. What attracted you to this role, and what about Local Bounti’s approach made you feel this was the right time to step in?

You’ve spent much of your career in consumer packaged goods and fresh food. Looking at indoor agriculture today, what feels familiar—and what feels fundamentally different—from the industries you’ve worked in before?

The fundamentals haven’t changed. Whether you’re selling a beverage or a salad kit, consumers still expect quality, consistency, and a brand they can trust. The same goes for our retail partners—on-time, in-full delivery with the highest quality remains the gold standard.  We see a long-term opportunity to reshape consumers’ perception of value in the produce aisle – we think we are delivering exceptional value in terms of product quality and as consumers come to better appreciate how this exceeds the status quo within conventionally-grown greens, we can drive greater volumes at attractive prices that will make this new era of CEA accessible to everyone.

But the ‘how’ is fundamentally different. In traditional CPG, you’re managing stable, predictable inventory. With indoor ag, we’re dealing with a living product where yield and shelf life are the ultimate differentiators. That’s the daily challenge. For me, the real shift is the ‘why.’ I’m grateful for my foundational training in the soft drink industry, but my perspective changed after having children—you can’t feed a growing population with soda, but you can make a life-changing impact through sustainable agriculture.

There’s a tangible passion in this category that’s different. From our growers to the families picking our products up at the grocery store, there’s a deep, personal relationship with the food we put on the table. We aren’t just moving units—we’re nourishing people. That sense of purpose creates a culture of care and intensity you don’t find in traditional CPG.

Local Bounti has taken a measured approach to scaling, even as demand for indoor-grown leafy greens continues to evolve. From your seat, what does “responsible growth” look like at Local Bounti, and how do you decide when—and where—to grow next?

Responsible growth means expansion should be demand-driven, not capacity-driven. In response to growing demand, we identified an opportunity to enhance our facility in Georgia to create additional capacity.  We added our “Stack” phase to what was a traditional greenhouse facility, which resulted in a tripling of our run-rate production as compared to steady-state in the prior year period.  This experience was a scaled case study in what’s possible with our Stack & Flow® Technology and put us in position to complete two fully integrated state-of-the-art facilities in Texas and Washington over the past 18 months.  This is the power of the technology at Local Bounti – it provides us with the flexibility to scale in direct response to a retail environment that now views CEA as essential infrastructure. By aligning production ramps with long-term customer needs, we strive to ensure every square foot we add contributes to our path toward achieving positive adjusted EBITDA in 2026. It’s about being disciplined with our capital while being aggressive where the market wants us to be.

Retailers today are looking for more than just supply—they want consistency, flexibility, and long-term partners. How has Local Bounti’s hybrid growing model and product mix shaped the kinds of retail conversations you’re having now compared to a few years ago?

A few years ago, retail conversations were about ‘if’ CEA could work. Today, the attitude has shifted to an absolute ‘need’ for what we provide – in fact, we are hearing directly from retailers that they have tripled their allocation to the category for this upcoming year. Our hybrid Stack & Flow® technology has fundamentally changed those discussions as it is designed to solve the three biggest pain points for retailers: supply reliability, consistency and shrink. By combining the best of vertical and greenhouse growing, we’re delivering significantly higher quality plants with shelf life often double or triple that of our field grown competition. Retailers realize they need a partner with a durable and stable platform who can offer the flexibility of a broad product mix—from living heads to salad kits—with a reliable, local supply chain. When we show them our technology translates directly into less waste on their shelves and a better experience for their customers at home, the partnership moves from trial to long-term strategic necessity.

As Local Bounti works toward sustainable profitability, what lessons from the company’s recent operational and commercial progress would you share with other CEA operators trying to build durable, resilient businesses?

The biggest lesson: you have to go slow to go fast. Building a durable business requires getting the foundation right before you try to scale. That starts with the right people in the right seats at the right time, ensuring your team’s expertise matches your current stage of growth. It’s also critical to build specifically for current and future customer needs without over-engineering your systems. I think this is something that our co-founders and CEO Kathleen Valiasek saw early and have instilled into our culture.  We are constantly making trade-offs to maximize the opportunities in front of us while preparing for the future, and that means being thoughtful with how we are deploying resources.  While this industry often feels like a ‘tech’ business in trade conversations, we have to remember that at our core, we’re still farmers. Success comes when you treat technology as a tool to support the biology, rather than letting tech dictate the farm.  If we can keep that perspective intact and match it with prudent financial planning, the future will look extremely bright for Local Bounti.

Growing Change, One Building at a Time: A Q&A with Green Food Solutions Founder Mary Wetherill

From indoor farm amenities in apartment buildings to a franchise model designed for real-world profitability and impact, Mary Wetherill, CEO and Co-Founder of Green Food Solutions, is rethinking how food is grown. With a mission to empower a new local food system through partnerships, her team is helping entrepreneurs  launch controlled environment farms that are practical, profitable, and deeply connected to their communities. Ahead of exhibiting at the upcoming CEA Summit East in Danville, Virginia, we caught up with Mary to learn more about the model behind Green Food Solutions—and why she believes this locally rooted, partnership-driven approach is the future of urban farming.

Your mission to empower a new local food system through partnerships is front and center in everything Green Food Solutions does. What does that look like in practice—and why do you think this kind of local, community-driven approach is the future of CEA?

At a high level, Empowering a New Local Food System™ through partnerships means taking the workable, practical and profitable Farming as a Service (FaaS™) business model we created in Jersey City and throughout NYC—and working with approved partner farmers and entrepreneurs to replicate it. We train, support, and help them launch Green Food Solutions Farm Amenity® and Garden Amenity® businesses in cities across the East Coast and beyond.

Our partners are trained into leaders and innovators of a successful modern urban farming approach in each area or multiple areas.  Why we know the model we created is the future of CEA in cities, is simple. It’s practical, profitable and scalable.

All the renderings and visions of what urban farming in cities could look like—skyscrapers with cows on every floor, plants covering building exteriors—were unrealistic, often unsafe or inhumane, and not practical or profitable. Rooftop farms on buildings 10 stories or higher face challenges like intense wind exposure, which can pose serious liability issues for property owners. Meanwhile, a number of the large-scale, factory-style CEA farms that were once held up as success stories have shut down.

While many industrial CEA farms set out to create local food production with fewer food miles, greater access, sustainability, and resilience in our cities and communities, the reality often fell short. A closer look reveals that some vertical farms relied on traditional sales channels—like grocery stores—that required them to ship food thousands of miles just to reach their markets. As for food access, most of their products were sold at premium prices, making them inaccessible to those who could not afford it.

Regarding sustainability, CEA farms face hurdles from food miles to reliance on substrates like peat with environmental drawbacks. High energy consumption is another major concern.  And while aiming for resilience, some large, factory size CEA farms are still subject to pathogens, supply chain disruptions and dependence on conventional agriculture for essentials like seeds. It is certainly not resilient in the way it was imagined.

We wanted to build a food system that adapts to the world today because we need a new food system now. So we created something practical that works in the built environment that exists. We also had it in our main goals to create a business that meets the vision, as imagined, of local food production, access, sustainability and resilience. At Green Food Solutions we completely avoided traditional sales channels and created new ones instead. We created a new model and food system entirely. This is why we know it is the future of CEA, especially in cities.

Green Food SolutionsThe idea of treating indoor farms as building amenities—like a pool or gym—is such a creative twist. What sparked that idea, and how are you seeing it change the way people interact with food in their communities?                                                      

We are farmers ourselves, and after farming in shipping containers in Brooklyn and selling the food to the local community we had to move our operation.  We started renting a small section out of a 10,000-square-foot greenhouse to continue to grow for our customers alongside a failing commercial farm selling basil to Manhattan restaurants. We were also struggling to make ends meet as farmers selling the food we grew. The greenhouse was on top of an affordable housing building in the Bronx and I saw that none of the food they were growing went to the people who lived in the building.

That was it. I had the idea to put farms in every building where people lived. It hit everything we thought was important in a local food system: zero food miles, access and affordability.  I set off and spoke to as many developers as we could. When we got our first break it was our flagship farm on the rooftop at the Denizen in Brooklyn NY.  Seventy-nine hydroponic systems growing all sorts of varieties of crops from leafy greens, herbs, tomatoes, cucumbers, melons, strawberries and more. It was home to all our research. We sell the food, offer a CSA, and all the testing and research on what to grow.

We refined the model with customer input and what was valuable to them. It was a lot of work, but we created a profitable system that now is a win-win for cities, property owners and farmers together. As other developers saw what we did, they kept referring us to others because they saw how we were different from other attempts. We now have farms in buildings all over the city in community centers, senior centers, food pantries, homeless shelters, multiple luxury residential buildings, corporate offices, schools, wellness centers, libraries and even correctional facilities and residential treatment facilities.

All of our farms except for our first, is an indoor CEA farm serving freshly harvested food weekly to the people who live, work or play in that building. Our farmers have become the most popular members of the communities they grow for and we are reconnecting people with their food system once again. All the food is picked up after every harvest and many of the community members say it’s the highlight of their week when our farmers are on site. They love knowing their farmers and having a say about what we grow for them.

You’ve spoken candidly about the struggles many CEA businesses face, from startup costs to limited access. How does your franchise model flip the script and help more people launch successful, mission-driven farms?

I think how we flip the switch is simple. On a high level, our model is already proven and tested, while most CEA (Controlled Environment Agriculture) farms are still trying to figure out commercial viability and a working business model in real-time. Again, they’re often still using traditional sales channels and supply chains. We, on the other hand, don’t rely on those traditional channels or distribution.

Another game-changer is that, in our model, a farmer gets paid for their farming, not just the sale of the food. This makes a huge difference in the quality of life and bottom line of an urban farm business. Monetarily, starting a partnership with Green Food Solutions in your city or area has very low startup costs, especially compared to building a commercial farm. Factory CEA has astronomical startup and operational costs. Our model shows our partners how to cover not only their ROI in year one but also their operating costs.

Just like our food system, we’re transparent about our startup costs and the fast ROI our system can provide. Our low-end startup cost is $57,603.33, and that can be covered by just one Farm Amenity® sale. Our business is exactly that – a real business to not only grow food but also profits. Our training and business support help launch each new partnership into the same success we’ve created as we continue to grow together.

We’re even required by the Federal Trade Commission to share our numbers with potential partners. We’re proud of our success and are committed to supporting our partners on their path to success too. That’s another thing that really flips the switch: we work together. Most large CEA farms are proprietary and private; they often don’t even allow the community to enjoy the farms or be part of the local food they’re asked to buy. With Green Food Solutions, you’re an active member of your community.

Training and education are big parts of what you offer. For someone new to farming—or even just curious—what are the most important things they need to know before getting started?

The wonderful thing about this business opportunity is that all they need to do other than get 2 certifications — 1 in food safety and 1 in IPM management — is to be able to follow a system.  Our partners receive a comprehensive operation manual detailing:

o             Establishing your Business (EIN, Insurances, site selection, etc)

o             Personnel (hiring processes, interviewing process, employment law, job descriptions, etc)

o             Marketing your Business (local promotion, brand specs, public relations, marketing strategies, etc)

o             Operating Procedures and SOPs (equipment and supply lists, vendors, processes and how to do everything step by step).

They also get leads generated from us, sales call support, marketing templates, proposal templates, grand opening support, social media management, technology support, PowerPoints and scripts for sales and engaging their community at the farm. We provide a complete system to follow for their success. And they have our dedicated support every step of the way as they grow the business.

You’re now growing a network of franchise partners around the country. What kinds of people are drawn to this work, and what impact are you seeing as they bring Green Food Solutions to their own communities?

We have a vetting system we use to validate our potential partners. We see a lot of people interested in the work we are doing. Some people who are looking to switch careers and be part of making a difference while building a business for their future.

What we look for first and foremost in a person is the passion to be part of a food system & brand that is centered around addressing the issues of access, affordability, sustainability and resilience in a real way. We look for a team player. We ask a series of questions that include evaluating the territory they are interested in starting a Green Food Solutions, as well as why they want to be part of a franchise as opposed to owning an independent business. How do they plan on running the business, do they want to hire or be the farmer themselves and how soon do they plan to begin operations?

These are only a scratch and sniff of the questions we ask and the deep dive we take together. We know we are in this for the long haul together, so we also look for good people we want to work with. Good people for a better food system now. That’s what we are looking for in a partner. All else can be trained. We offer discounts to our veterans, LGBTQ and Black owned business partners.
