Dr. Marito Garcia, Darden School of Business, University of Virginia
Indoor Ag-Conversations panelist Dr. Marito Garcia is currently a Fellow at the Darden School of Business, University of Virginia, Charlottesville, Virginia, USA. He is also a Board Director at Learning Equality, a non-profit education technology company based in San Diego, California. The organization seeks to bridge the digital divide by bringing the online learning revolution offline. Dr. Garcia is a member of the international working group on digital credentialing as part of the “internet of education” initiative. In addition, Dr. Garcia co-founder of Italpinas Development Corporation, a green-building development company in Asia, based in Manila, Philippines. And, he is co-founder of Orenko Ltd (Cambridge, UK), an energy development company.
Extensive Background
Dr. Garcia served as senior staff at the World Bank, Washington DC in various capacities. These included Sector Manager for Education for Latin America and the Caribbean, Lead Economist and Regional Program Manager for New Economy Skills for Africa. At the World Bank, he also managed the Latin American regional portfolio of education and skills development programs ($2.8-billion covering 32 countries). This encompassed basic education, secondary education, technical-vocational education and training, higher education and skills and workforce development. Prior to the World Bank, Marito was a Research Fellow and economist at the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) in Washington DC. IFPRI is one the research centers within the Consultative Group on International Agriculture Research (CGIAR).
Author and Education
Marito is author of several books (available in Amazon.com). Among the book topics include education technology, consumption economics, conditional cash transfers, skills and workforce development, and early childhood development. He worked on these topics across 62 countries.
Marito holds a PhD in Development Studies at the Erasmus University Rotterdam’s Institute of Social Studies, the Netherlands. In addition, he completed the Executive Program at the Harvard.
