She’ll also join representatives from Bayer Crop Science, Sakata, CEAC-University of Arizona and Stratagerm Consulting for the panel discussion, “Seed Breeding for Indoor Ag from 3-4:30 pm on Wednesday, May 22, 2019. We checked in with Stacy recently to get a preview of some of the seed technologies and treatments she’d be discussing.
Q: Share 2-3 key points you plan to cover during your Indoor Ag-Con presentation
A: I plan to cover the following areas:
o Benefits and Complexities of Seed Technologies
o Introduce existing seed treatments
o Encourage discussion for collaborative projects for potential new seed treatments suitable for indoor growing systems.
Q: What do you think is the most pressing challenge in the indoor agriculture sector today and how are you/your company addressing it?
A: We have had great success with collaborating with both seed breeders and growers in the development of new seed treatments that are suitable for outdoor cultivation practices. At this time, we are exploring how our existing seed treatments may benefit the indoor vertical farming sector and whether there is a need for Germains to develop new seed technologies that are suitable for indoor cultivation practices.
Q: What do you hope to get out of your participation in this year’s Indoor Ag-Con event in Las Vegas?
A: We hope to engage in conversations that provide more insight into the industry, build relationships, so that Germains may gain visibility while capturing new ideas for future R&D projects that will help maximize crop performance for the indoor growers.
Q: What is your role and how did you get involved with your current company/organization
A: I have worked in various segments of the agriculture industry for over 20 years including obtaining a bachelor’s degree in agriculture business and owning and operating a 22-acre farm in Hawaii. When I decided to discontinue my farm operation, I opted to look for a new agriculture career in California which led me to Germains Seed Technology in 2015. At the time, I had ample field experience but minimal knowledge about seed treatments based on my own seed purchasing experiences.
As a Sales Account and Marketing Manager for North America, I quickly learned that there is a long list of both organic and conventional seed treatments beyond my basic knowledge of seed treatments such as insecticides, fungicides, and pellets that improve crop productivity. As we conducted interviews with growers, we found that many commercial growers did not realize that Germains seed treatments are scientifically formulated for each species, environmental conditions, and cultivation practices whether it be organic or conventional. Nor do they have the time to do the research. Therefore, we redirected our target audience from the seed industry to educational campaigns to help educate growers about the benefits and complexities of seed treatments using everything from print advertising, editorials, field trials, and webinars.
In addition to marketing and account management, I am responsible for engaging with the various sectors of the agriculture industry including growers to discover seed-related problems the industry is facing. Such problems transpire into new R&D projects that convert into the launch of new seed treatments that become solutions for improving crop productivity.
